What we build

Hardscaping, concrete and masonry for your outdoor living space

Hardscape comes first: paver and concrete patios, walkways, driveways, retaining walls and steps. Concrete, masonry, carpentry and iron work come from our crew, on one license and one contract.

Pavers

We set paver patios, walkways and driveways on excavated, compacted base rock with edge restraint on every open side. We lay tumbled, large-format and permeable concrete pavers, cut and fitted to the shape of the yard.

Retaining Walls

We build concrete and concrete block retaining walls, low garden walls and planter walls with steps. The footing, the steel and the drainage behind the wall come first, then the stucco or stone veneer finish.

Stone-faced outdoor kitchen island with built-in gas grill and stainless drawers

Outdoor Kitchens

We build outdoor kitchens as masonry: a block or framed island finished in stone veneer or stucco, with a stone, tile or poured concrete counter. The patio and footing under it come with the job, and we coordinate the gas, electrical and water runs.

Stamped Concrete

Stamped concrete gives a patio or walkway the color and texture of cut stone in one poured slab. We form it, set the steel, stamp the pattern and seal the finish.

Learn More
Close view of dry-laid flagstone with tight hand-cut joints

Flagstone

We build natural flagstone patios, walkways, steps and landings across the Monterey Bay area. The stone goes down mortar-set on a concrete slab or dry-laid on compacted base, with fitted joints and a cut stone border.

Learn More
Two-tone stone veneer wrapping an outside corner under a copper cap

Masonry

Concrete block walls, stone veneer, columns, planters and masonry steps for homes across the Monterey Bay area. Footing, steel and drainage go in before the first block is laid.

Learn More

Fireplaces and Fire Pits

We build masonry outdoor fireplaces and gas or wood fire pits, set on a footing sized for the weight. Stone veneer or stucco finishes, cut stone caps and seat walls, with free estimates across the Monterey Bay area.

Learn More

Pergolas and Patio Covers

We build wood pergolas and solid roof patio covers, freestanding or attached to the house. Posts land on poured footings and masonry column bases, and the frame is cut on site.

Learn More

Concrete

General concrete work for homes and commercial property: walkways, sidewalks, steps, curbs, mow strips, pads and low site walls. We do the forming, the steel and the finish, and we pump concrete into back yards a truck cannot reach.

One contractor, one contract

Base prep and drainage decide how long hardscape lasts

Aguilar and Sons Construction is a family construction company based in Salinas. We have held a California general building license since 2000, CSLB #787101. A general building license covers the trades an outdoor project needs: concrete, masonry, carpentry and iron work.

Outdoor projects often get split up. One company pours the concrete, another does the stone and block work, a third builds the fence and hangs the gate. We build all of it under one contract, so the patio, the wall and the cover follow the same plan.

What holds a patio flat is what sits under it. Our crew does the excavation, the base, the drainage and the steel, whether the finish is pavers, stone or poured concrete. Water gets a way out, and every wall gets a footing under it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions About Hardscape and Concrete Work?

The questions Monterey Bay homeowners ask us most. If yours is not here, call or text and we will answer it.

How do your estimates work?
Estimates are free and we do them at the property. We measure the area, look at grades, drainage and access, and go through materials with you. Then you get the scope and the price in writing. Call or text (831) 262-9943 to set one up.
What areas do you serve?
We are based in Salinas and work the Monterey Bay area within about 45 minutes. On the Peninsula that means Monterey, Pacific Grove, Carmel-by-the-Sea, Pebble Beach and Carmel Valley. We also work Marina, Santa Cruz, Aptos, Watsonville and Hollister. We drive over from Salinas for the work.
Are you licensed and bonded?
Yes. Aguilar and Sons Construction holds California Contractors State License Board license #787101, classification B General Building, licensed since 2000. The license carries a contractor's bond, and workers' compensation insurance is on file. A B license is the classification for projects that take at least two unrelated building trades. You can check the license yourself at cslb.ca.gov.
Should I go with pavers or stamped concrete?
Pavers are single units set on compacted base and sand, so a section can be lifted and reset years later. Stamped concrete is one slab, colored and textured before it sets, so it has fewer joints and a different look. We build both, and we can price both on the same yard.
Do I need a permit for a patio, a wall or a deck?
It depends on the work and on your city or county. California exempts a retaining wall only when it is not over 4 feet, measured from the bottom of the footing. A wall that holds a surcharge, like a slope or a driveway above it, needs a permit at any height. A deck has to pass four tests to skip a permit. It must be under 200 square feet and no more than 30 inches above grade. It also has to be unattached and clear of the required exit door. A patio or walkway at grade usually needs no building permit, though a new driveway approach at the street does. Cities and counties write stricter rules of their own, so confirm with your building department before you plan around a number.
Can you build from my landscape architect's or designer's plans?
Yes. Bring the plans and we build to them, including engineered walls and foundations built to the engineer's plans and the permit. If you do not have plans, we lay the job out on site with you and put the scope in writing.
How does coastal weather affect concrete and iron?
Salt air is the local issue, not frost. California's state highway engineers treat anything within 1,000 feet of the ocean as a marine atmosphere. Inside that line they call for more concrete cover over the reinforcing steel. On a coastal lot that means steel kept deep in the concrete, galvanized or stainless hardware, and coated iron. Summers here are cool and foggy, with an average July near 62 degrees on the coast. Concrete cures slowly in that weather, so pours get timed for it. Freezing is rare, so freeze-thaw damage is not the local problem. Those are engineering practices, not a rule for a backyard patio, so confirm with your building department.
What should I have ready before the estimate?
A rough idea of what you want built and where it goes. Photos of the area help, along with any plans or a site plan you already have. If the property sits under design review or coastal rules, say so early. That changes the drawings and the schedule. We handle the measuring.
