Bare dirt to a finished backyard patio

A concrete patio is the fastest way to turn a bare backyard into usable space. Aguilar and Sons Construction pours backyard patios across Salinas and the Monterey Bay area. Most start the same way: the house is new and the yard behind it is still dirt. We take it from there: layout, excavation, compacted base, steel and the pour.

We also pour patio extensions and replace slabs that have cracked or settled. Finishes run from a plain broom texture to salt and sand, or stamped and colored concrete. If you want a surface you can lift and reset, we also install concrete pavers. We are a licensed general building contractor, and estimates are free, so call or text (831) 262-9943.

What We Handle

  • New home backyards taken from bare dirt to a finished patio slab
  • Patio extensions and replacement of cracked or settled slabs
  • Excavation, compacted base rock and forming to your layout
  • Rebar tied on chairs so the steel sits inside the slab
  • Broom, salt and sand finishes, with stamped and colored options
  • Large format poured pads with gravel or turf joints
  • Drainage fall built away from the house, with steps and landings
  • Footings set for a patio cover you plan to add later

How we build a backyard patio, from bare dirt to the pour

The first pass is layout. We mark where the patio lands and how far it reaches off the house. Then the sod or old surface comes out and we dig to depth. That dirt work is the part nobody sees and the part that holds the slab up.

Next comes base rock, spread and compacted in layers. We set the forms and tie rebar on chairs. The chairs hold the steel inside the slab instead of down on the dirt. Rebar holds a slab together across a crack and keeps both sides level.

Then the pour. Concrete goes in, gets screeded and floated, and the finish goes on while it is workable. Where a truck cannot reach the yard, we pump it around the side. Control joints get cut so the slab cracks along a line we put in.

Concrete patio finishes, from broom texture to large format pads

A broom finish is the workhorse. It leaves a light texture that stays grippy when the fog rolls in. A salt finish presses small pits into the surface, and a sand finish brings out the fine aggregate. For real stone underfoot, look at natural flagstone instead.

A lot of new homes want the modern version: large format pads with gravel or turf in the joints. Each pad is poured on its own with the gap left open. The gaps give water somewhere to go. We pour them as full patios and as runs between two houses.

Steps and landings get poured with the patio when the yard has a grade change. The same pour can carry concrete steps and walkways out to the side gate. Tell us early about a shade structure. We set footings for a pergola or a solid patio cover while the forms are open.

Ground and weather a patio contractor plans for around Salinas

The ground changes a lot in a short drive here. Parts of the valley floor sit on heavy clay that swells when it is wet and cracks when it dries. Closer to the water it turns to old dune sand that drains fast but holds no shape. Neither forgives a slab poured on loose dirt, so the base does the work.

Salt air is the other local factor. Caltrans treats structures within 1,000 feet of the ocean as a marine atmosphere exposure. That is a bridge standard, not a patio rule. It is still the reason we keep good cover over the steel near the water.

FAQ

Concrete Patios Questions, Answered

Common questions about concrete patios across Salinas and the Monterey Bay area. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

What makes one concrete patio cost more than another?
Size is the obvious one, and it is rarely the biggest. A yard a truck can back up to is a different job than one that needs a pump. Tear-out, the dirt that has to move, drainage and the finish all move the number.
Do I need a permit for a concrete patio?
Often not for the slab itself, but it depends on where you are. California's exemption list names sidewalks and driveways not more than 30 inches above the ground next to them. Cities amend that list, and coastal property can add coastal permit rules. We check with your building department before we pour.
Which way does a concrete patio drain?
Away from the house, always. We set the forms so the finished slab falls toward the yard rather than the foundation. On a flat lot that fall has to be built in, because the dirt will not do it. If there is no low spot for the water, we add a drain.
How thick is the slab, and does it get rebar?
A backyard patio gets a standard residential slab thickness, and we go thicker where weight lands. A spa pad or a spot a vehicle can reach gets more concrete. Steel goes in on chairs so it sits inside the slab. Its job is to hold the slab together across a crack.
Does the soil under my yard change how the patio is built?
Yes. It is the main reason two patios the same size get built differently. Heavy clay swells when wet and cracks when it dries, so the base has to take that movement. Sandy coastal ground drains fast but has little grip, so compaction keeps the slab supported.
How long before we can use the new patio?
Concrete keeps gaining strength for weeks after the pour, so the answer depends on the load. Light foot traffic comes first, and furniture and anything heavy wait longer. Cool, damp weather on this coast slows the set down. We give you the timing for your own pour.
