Redwood decks built from the footings up

Aguilar and Sons Construction is a deck builder in Salinas, and we build redwood decks across the Monterey Bay area. A deck starts under the ground. We dig and pour the footings, set the posts on metal bases, then size the beams and joists.

Most decks we build come with the rest of the space attached. That usually means steps down to a concrete patio, built-in benches and planters, and railings in wood or custom iron. We build all of it under one contract as a licensed general building contractor. Call or text (831) 262-9943 for a free estimate.

What We Handle

  • Redwood decks, attached to the house or freestanding
  • Poured footings, posts on metal bases, and beams and joists sized for the span
  • Deck steps and landings down to a patio, a lower deck or the yard
  • Built-in benches and planter boxes framed into the deck
  • Railings in wood or custom iron, including welded scrollwork
  • Deck replacement, from tear-out of the old frame to the new surface
  • Corrosion resistant hardware and coated iron on decks near the water
  • Permit paperwork and framing inspections on decks that need them

What goes into a redwood deck

Footings are dug and poured below the surface. The posts sit on metal bases that keep the end grain off the concrete. Beams and joists get sized for the span and the load, and blocking keeps the frame from twisting.

Decking goes down over that frame with a gap between boards so water drains through. Steps and landings get framed to even risers, which matters at night. Benches and planter boxes are framed into the deck instead of set on top, so they do not rock.

We build railings in wood to match the deck, or in custom iron with thin uprights that keep the view. On a sloped yard, a raised deck can do the work a retaining wall would otherwise do.

Deck installation around Salinas and the Monterey Bay

Summers here run cool and foggy more often than hot, and the rain comes in winter. Freezing is rare here, so a deck is not fighting freeze and thaw. It is fighting moisture that sits in the shade and salt air that works on hardware.

Caltrans counts structures within 1,000 feet of the ocean as a marine atmosphere exposure and tightens what it specifies there. That is a bridge specification rather than a deck rule, but the salt is the same. Near the water we specify corrosion resistant hardware and coated iron for the connections.

A deck usually meets a patio at the bottom of the steps, and it often carries a wood pergola. We plan the footings for that cover while the deck frame is open. Adding posts later means cutting into finished work.

Deck permits and fire zone materials

Most decks need a building permit, because the state exemption is narrow. We line up the permit paperwork with you and meet the inspector when the deck is framed. On a project that pulls in other trades, we run the job as your general contractor on one contract.

Parts of Carmel Valley, the Del Monte Forest and the hills above Aptos sit in mapped fire hazard severity zones. The state updated those maps in 2025. So the first step is looking the address up on the state viewer.

California is also finalizing a Zone 0 rule for the first five feet around a home in fire-prone areas. The state law behind it counts an attached deck as part of the structure. It is still moving through the state approval process, so nothing there is final. In a mapped fire hazard zone we build to that draft standard now.

FAQ

Decks Questions, Answered

Common questions about decks across Salinas and the Monterey Bay area. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (831) 262-9943

What drives the cost of a new deck?
Size and height do most of it. A deck reaching out over a slope needs deeper footings, taller posts and more railing. Access matters too, along with the railing material and removing an old deck. We price the deck after we see the site, and the estimate is free.
Does a deck need a permit?
Most real decks do. The state exemption covers a deck no bigger than 200 square feet and no more than 30 inches above grade. That deck also has to be free standing and must not serve the required exit door. All four have to be true, so we confirm with your building department.
Can I build a redwood deck in a fire hazard zone?
Often yes, but the materials get checked first. In those zones the code sets rules for a deck's walking surface within 10 feet of the house. Structures attached to the house, or within 3 feet of it, have to be noncombustible or ignition resistant. The state keeps a directory of decking materials that meet those rules.
How does the coastal fog affect a wood deck?
Moisture is the thing to plan around, since boards in shade stay damp through the wet season. We frame the deck so water drains through the gaps and air moves underneath. The finish waits until the wood has dried out. That coat gets refreshed every few seasons, and composite decking is an option if you would rather skip it.
Can you replace an old deck without rebuilding the frame?
Sometimes. We pull a few boards and look at the posts, beams, joists and ledger. If the frame is sound and the hardware is intact, new decking and a new railing can go over it. If the posts are soft or the ledger was never flashed, we take it back to the footings.
What are the options for deck railings?
Wood or custom iron. A wood railing matches the deck and takes the same stain. Iron gives thinner uprights that block less of the view, plain or scrollwork. We weld iron railings and gates ourselves, so the railing gets built with the deck instead of ordered in later.
