Redwood fences, wrought iron fences and custom driveway gates

Aguilar and Sons Construction builds fences and gates across the Monterey Bay area. Fence installation here covers redwood fences, iron fences and custom iron gates. Driveway gates can swing by hand or run on a motor. Our crew digs the holes, sets the posts in concrete and welds the iron.

We are a general building contractor based in Salinas, licensed by the California Contractors State License Board since 2000. A fence usually lands in the middle of a bigger yard project. Hiring one hardscape contractor in Salinas keeps it on a single contract. Estimates are free and done at the house, so call or text (831) 262-9943.

Redwood fence and iron fence installation

A redwood fence starts at the post holes. We dig them to depth and set the posts in concrete before the rails go on. Rails and pickets get cut on site so the fence follows the ground. A gate in the run gets a heavier post on each side.

An iron fence is welded work. We measure the run, then build panels that fit the opening and step down a slope. Iron leaves the view open, which matters where a solid fence would block a hillside. Iron also works along the top of a retaining wall.

Parts of Carmel Valley, the Del Monte Forest and the hills above Aptos sit in mapped fire hazard severity zones. California is finalizing a Zone 0 rule for the first five feet around a home. The draft would bar new combustible fences and gates there, with a non-combustible section where a fence meets the house. It is still moving through the state approval process, so we build that connection to the draft standard now.

Custom iron gates and driveway gate installation

A gate gets built to its opening. We measure the posts or columns, then fabricate the gate to that width. A walk gate can match the fence beside it or stand alone as an entry piece.

Driveway gates swing or slide. A swing gate needs room to open, which a sloped or short driveway does not always have. A slide gate runs on a track along the fence line instead. Either way the posts or stone and block columns go on footings sized for the gate.

Automating a driveway gate comes down to power. A circuit has to reach the gate, and a licensed electrician runs it. Conduit is cheap to place while a new concrete driveway is still open, and expensive to add later. Permits depend on the jurisdiction, so we check the counter for your address.

Iron railings and iron fabrication on the Monterey Bay coast

Our custom wrought iron railings run along steps, landings and a redwood deck. Plain pickets, scrollwork or a mix all get welded up to fit the run. Steps are the fussy part, because the railing has to follow the rise and stay level on top.

We weld and fabricate iron on its own too. Gates, brackets, decorative panels and one-off pieces get built from a measurement taken at the house. Custom metal fabrication is how an odd opening or an old wall gets a gate that fits.

Salt air is what works on iron here. Caltrans classes structures within 1,000 feet of the ocean as a marine atmosphere. Inside that line its bridge guidance calls for more concrete cover over the steel. We use the same reasoning near the water, with galvanized hardware and coated iron.

FAQ

Fences and Gates Questions, Answered

Common questions about fences and gates across Salinas and the Monterey Bay area. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

What drives the price of a fence or gate?
Length comes first, then the material. Redwood and iron price differently, and a custom gate costs more than plain fence. Ground matters too, since a slope, hard digging or a tight side yard slows the post work. Columns, automation and custom fabrication each add to the job.
How tall can a fence be, and do I need a permit?
California's building permit exemption list covers fences not over 7 feet high. That is the building permit only, and local zoning limits are separate and usually lower. Carmel-by-the-Sea's table shows 4 feet in a front setback and 6 feet in side and rear. Rules differ by town, so we confirm with the city, or with Monterey County's Housing and Community Development department.
Wrought iron or redwood for a fence near the coast?
Both work here. Iron's enemy is salt air, so it gets a coating and galvanized hardware. Redwood's enemy is standing damp, so posts sit in concrete footings. Summers here are cool and foggy and freezing is rare, so wood moves less than in a cold climate.
Can you automate my driveway gate?
Yes. We build the gate and its columns, then line up the power it needs. A licensed electrician runs the circuit out to the gate. Say so at the estimate even if automation comes later, so the posts get sized for it.
How do you know where my property line is?
Where the property line sits is the owner's call. We build where you tell us, so the line needs to be settled first. A recent survey or a surveyor's stakes are what settle it. A word with the neighbor before we dig keeps the fence where everyone expects it.
Can you build iron railings for my deck and steps?
Yes. Custom iron railings are welded to fit the run, in plain pickets or scrollwork. We measure the finished deck or steps first, so the railing lands level and the spacing stays even. Call or text (831) 262-9943 to set up a free estimate at the house.
